Esterillos Oeste is a charming beach town we visited during our eco-tourism trip to Costa Rica, right after our time in Puerto Jiménez. The town had a relaxed and quiet vibe, which was a nice contrast to the bustling jungle adventures we had earlier in the trip. The beach itself was stunning, but the surf was extremely rough during our visit, so we decided not to go into the water.
Unfortunately, my husband wasn’t feeling well, so we had to put aside the activities we had planned. Instead, I took the opportunity to wander around the town and soak in the local atmosphere. Esterillos Oeste felt authentic and laid-back, with small shops, friendly locals, and colorful murals scattered throughout. Walking around gave me a chance to explore the little details of this beachside town that I might not have noticed otherwise.
Though our time in Esterillos Oeste didn’t go as planned, it gave me a unique perspective on the slower, everyday side of life in Costa Rica. It wasn’t the most action-packed part of our trip, but it was still an interesting and memorable stop.
During our stay in Esterillos Oeste, we were fortunate to book a room at Hotel La Dolce Vita, a delightfil little spot situated right on the beach. The hotel’s location couldn’t have been more ideal. To access the beach, all we had to do was walk past the small pool and head through a gate on one side of the property. In just a few steps, we were standing on the sandy shoreline, with the ocean stretching out before us. It was a tranquil and picturesque setup that made it easy to enjoy the natural beauty of Costa Rica.
On the other side of the hotel, a different experience awaited. Exiting from that direction put us on the path to town, making it simple to explore the area and get a feel for the local community. The dual access to both the beach and the town added a lot of convenience and charm to our stay.
I made friends with the local kitties by saving them some of the eggs I got for breakfast.
The local dogs liked us as well.
I spent some time walking along the beach, letting the soft sand shift beneath my feet with each step. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore was both powerful and soothing, creating a rhythmic backdrop that felt almost meditative. As I strolled, I took in the beauty of my surroundings—the wide expanse of the ocean stretching to the horizon, the occasional flock of seabirds flying overhead, and the way the sunlight shimmered on the water’s surface.
The beach itself had a raw, untouched quality that made it feel serene and peaceful. I noticed small details along the way, like seashells scattered in the sand and driftwood washed up on the shore. A gentle breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean, and I could feel it brushing against my face as I walked.
Though the surf was too rough to me for swimming, it didn’t take away from the experience. In fact, it added to the dramatic atmosphere of the beach, making it feel alive and dynamic. Walking along the shoreline gave me time to reflect, appreciate the moment, and feel connected to the natural beauty of Esterillos Oeste. It was a simple yet memorable part of my trip.
I also spent time walking through the town of Esterillos Oeste, exploring its quiet streets and taking in the local charm. The town had a laid-back and authentic feel, with a mix of colorful houses and small businesses that gave it character. I passed by homes of all kinds, ranging from modest wooden structures to more modern concrete buildings, each with its own unique personality. Some houses had vibrant paint colors, while others were decorated with beautiful plants or small gardens in their front yards.
As I wandered, I noticed little details that told stories about the daily lives of the people who lived there. I saw laundry drying in the sun, children playing outside, and local residents going about their day with a friendly wave or nod. The streets were quiet but alive with a sense of community, and I enjoyed observing the pace of life in this coastal town.
Walking through Esterillos Oeste gave me a chance to appreciate the simplicity and charm of the area. It was a peaceful experience, allowing me to connect with the local culture and get a deeper sense of the town beyond its stunning beach
As I wandered through the town of Esterillos Oeste, I couldn’t help but notice the fascinating variety of plants that added to its vibrant and tropical atmosphere. Lush greenery seemed to be everywhere, spilling out of yards and lining the streets. I saw told trees and flowers bursting with bright colors like pinks, purples, and yellows.
Some houses had small but beautiful gardens filled with a mix of local plants and flowers, creating a welcoming and lively feel. I came across vivid hibiscus blooms, their petals so vibrant they seemed almost unreal, and bougainvillea vines climbing up fences and walls, adding pops of color to the town. In some spots, I noticed towering banana plants and other fruit trees, their broad leaves creating natural canopies that provided much-needed shade.
Even the plants growing wild along the roadsides were captivating, with intricate patterns and shapes that hinted at the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. Walking through the town felt like strolling through a living, breathing garden, where nature seamlessly blended into everyday life. The plants added so much character and beauty to the town, making my exploration feel like a sensory treat.
As I wandered through the town of Esterillos Oeste, I not only noticed fascinating plants but also encountered a variety of animals that made the area feel lively and connected to nature. Birds were everywhere, flitting between the trees and filling the air with their calls. I spotted bright tropical species perched on branches, their vibrant colors standing out against the lush greenery. Occasionally, I saw tiny lizards darting across walls and pathways, blending into the environment with their quick movements.
The local cats, of course, were my favorite companions. Some lounged in sunny spots, while others watched curiously as I passed by. A few even approached me, likely recognizing me as their breakfast friend from earlier in the day. Their playful and relaxed demeanor added a sense of warmth to the town’s atmosphere.
I also saw dogs here and there, some wandering freely and others resting outside homes, enjoying the shade. They seemed content, adding to the overall laid-back vibe of Esterillos Oeste. In the quieter parts of town, I even heard the rustling of leaves and wondered if there were other small creatures, like iguanas or frogs, hidden among the plants.
The blend of vibrant plant life and the presence of so many animals made my walk through Esterillos Oeste feel like a small adventure, a reminder of how beautifully intertwined life and nature are in Costa Rica. It was a peaceful and enriching experience to simply observe and appreciate the everyday wonders of this coastal town.
I was struck not only by the fascinating plants and animals but also by the warmth and friendliness of the people. The locals seemed to embody the relaxed, easygoing spirit of the town. Some sat on their porches, enjoying the breeze and chatting with neighbors, while others worked in small shops or tended to their gardens. There was a natural rhythm to life here that felt unhurried and welcoming.
As I passed by, a few people greeted me with smiles or a friendly “hola,” which made me feel at ease, even as a visitor. I saw children playing together in open spaces, laughing as they chased each other or kicked around a soccer ball. It was heartwarming to see how the community came together in these simple, joyful moments.
In the town center, there were small clusters of activity, with locals gathered near shops or food stands, chatting and exchanging news. I even saw an elderly gentleman walking slowly down the street, nodding at nearly everyone he passed, as if he knew each one personally. It was clear that this was a tight-knit community where people looked out for one another.
The mix of friendly people, vibrant plants, curious animals, and the town’s relaxed charm made my walk through Esterillos Oeste feel like stepping into a storybook. Every corner I turned revealed something new, and the people I encountered made the experience all the more memorable and special.
There was a big Christmas parade! We heard the marching band playing for quite a while before we went out to see what it was.
We followed the parade and it ended at a football field.
What we wanted to do while in Esterillos Oeste was watch baby turtles be released. We just weren’t up to driving to the release sites. We were pretty tired by the end of our trip. We were in touch with Vida Tortuga and Victor Carmona about turtle releases, but unfortunately, we were not up to it at the time. It would have been so cool to see that!
Sunday we left the hotel, drove to San Jose, and had some extra time. We went to the City Mall in San Jose, had some food, and walked around there. We returned the rental car and had plenty of time to make our late evening flight. We got home safe and sound the next morning.
It was an exciting eco-tourism trip and we got to see so many animals. We were happy to support the eco-tourism in Costa Rica. We learned a lot, saw a lot, and tried not to disturb the eco system too much. It was a great time.
We enjoyed our time in Heredia, Monteverde, Uvita, Puerto Jimenez, and Esterillos Oeste. The things I did, the places I saw, the animals I observed, and the people I met was all fantastic. But there were many other places in Costa Rica that we didn't visit. Someone else might go on a trip here anot be very busy and not do any of the things I did. I'm glad I got a chance to be there and I'll always remember it.
